A Tribute to Steve Rees

Stephen Rees was the former Headmaster at Japari School where he worked from 2002 – 2020. Japari is an independent school catering for learners who have not achieved true success in mainstream schools.

In addition to his role as Head of School, Steve served as Chairman of SAALED, Johannesburg, (Southern African Association for Learning and Educational Difficulties), from 2001- 2012. SAALED ran many informative and relevant workshops and conferences, for parents, teachers and therapists, utilising both local and international presenters.

Steve was one of OISESA’s inaugural mentors, bringing his considerable experience and wisdom to the process as we worked to develop our fledgling model. The schools he visited often referred to him as ‘a true gentleman’ – and thoroughly enjoyed working with him. Steve stepped down from his role as mentor in February 2025 – we will miss him and wish him well on his road to recovery.
