Alta has extensive experience in the field of education, having taught Physical Science as both a teacher and Head of Department for 14 years. She has also worked in commercial training in England, served as a chemistry lecturer at Good Hope College in Khayelitsha, and contributed to the Schools Development Unit at the University of Cape Town. Additionally, she led the NPO ORT-Tech, which trained teachers in Mathematics, Science, and Technology, and worked as the Head of Curriculum at Curro Head Office for eight years. Her work experience spans from preschool to Grade 12 curricula and includes teacher training beyond Grade 12.

Alta has worked in a variety of schools, ranging from well-resourced independent schools to under-resourced schools in impoverished areas around Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Rustenburg. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led a team of teachers in packaging the CAPS curriculum from Grade 4 to 12 into self-driven learning units in collaboration with the Unit for Self-Driven Learning at Northwest University.

At Curro, Alta had the opportunity to travel globally, attending conferences such as the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE), and the World Education Summit in Delhi. She also presented at the Atiner Conference in Athens and visited schools in England, the Netherlands, and Finland. A partnership with the global project New Pedagogies for Deep Learning provided her with insights into global competencies (formerly known as 21st-century skills) and the concept of Deep Learning. Alta also led the development of a Robotics curriculum that was implemented in all Curro Schools.

Alta holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master’s in Education (cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch. She has a keen interest in innovative methods of delivering education in Africa, aiming to provide more students with access to quality education that fosters lifelong learning.
